All Iowa AAUW Reads By: Dr. Judy Beckman and Mary Dove State Program Co-Chairs
We would like to invite all our members to read the non-fiction book Inman’s War by Jeffrey S. Copeland. Then come to our spring conference and meet Copeland. Jeffrey Copeland was shopping at a flea market when he stumbled upon an old suitcase full of love letters. He crafts Inman’s War from those letters into a wonderful story that will bring laughter, tears, joy, pride, patriotism, angry, love, and friendship. Inman’s War is really the story of two wars; World War II and racism. Inman Perkins is a sergeant in a ‘Colored Battalion.” He and his men proved every day not just how strong our country was but how war and peace can break out at home and away. Inman shares his personal accounts of life and service through his letters to Olivia, his wife . Through Inman, Copeland gives us a chance to learn about an untold part of African American history whose contributions deserve more than footnotes. We are excited to bring such a gifted storyteller and writer to our spring conference which will be Friday April 29 and Saturday April 30 at Cedar Falls. Mark your calendar now to save the date. You won’t want to miss him! Share this information with friends and fellow AAUW members. Bring your book for signing.
