NEW: Follow AAUW at the Convention with Public Policy Director Lisa Maatz (you will remember her from our state meeting in Indianola.) Or sign up for the blogs by Lisa and others. Lisa says, " . . . AAUW will have a presence — in the form of me and AAUW members who are delegates and spouses of delegates — at both conventions. The visibility and networking are key ways we push our policy priorities, and to be truly successful we must do that in a nonpartisan way. I can tell you, AAUW is one of just a few women’s organizations — and the only major grassroots group — that will be at both conventions. This presence reflects the makeup of our membership, and it is one of our greatest strengths."

National Conference for   College Women Student Leaders

Michelle Voigts (left) and Ali March attended the 2008 National Conference for   College Women Student Leaders, sponsored by the Clarion branch. On returning Michelle wrote: "Thank you SO much for sponsoring me so I could attend the 2008 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. It was a great conference and I learned more then I ever thought I would. The workshops I attended were very informative about how to manage money, how to create a life long wellness plan, and how to present yourself at a job interview. I was very inspired after listening to the Women of Distinction. They taught me that I can follow my dreams and do whatever it is I have a calling for in life."  For more about the conference see Leadership Training Institute. Go to the Clarion website's photo gallery to see more photos and comments by Michelle and Ali.

October 25, 2008 reenactment of the Boone Suffrage Parade
All AAUW-IA members are invited to participate in the October 25, 2008 reenactment of the Boone Suffrage Parade. For information about the reenactment, go to www.celebratesuffrage2008.org  Also see "Take your places, Ladies!" below, for a play to be presented in the afternoon.

October 25, 2008 at 2:30 pm in Boone, Iowa

Take Your Places, Ladies!

A play
about the woman’s suffrage efforts in Iowa prior to the ratification of the 19th Amendment will be presented on the same day as the reenactment parade. Many people, women in particular, will be wearing 1908 period clothing for the parade. The play takes place in 1954…so that would be another potential marker for clothing. Bring your daughters, sons, grandchildren, and husbands.  They will have fun learning about their places, too.
