Marta Maldonado’s concern with understanding questions of power and finding ways to help eradicate inequality brought her to the study of sociology and continues to drive her work. Her commitment to social justice guides her interactions with students within and outside the classroom, her service to the university, and the connections she seeks to build between the university and the broader community.

Project Name Latinas al Éxito: A Proposal to Advance Economic Equity by Motivating Latinas Toward Success

Term Two-year grant
This program will reduce educational barriers for Latinas, change Latino perceptions about Latinas in the work force, and empower Latinas with college experience in four Iowa communities. Latina women will serve as godmothers to eighth-grade Latinas and take part in family events, godmother-led small groups of teenagers, college visits, and discussions with Latinas currently in college.

This project gives girls at the juvenile home a way to express feelings in culturally acceptable ways, a sense of community and teamwork, improved self-confidence, and an incentive to participate in the school activities. It will also help them heal from traumatic experiences.

Project Name The Effect of Health Education on the Incidence of Drug Abuse Among Teenagers
Ifeoma Nwankwor has worked as a house officer, prison doctor, and health facilitator and organized health outreaches, seminars, and campaigns aimed at health education and promotion. She plans to educate Nigerian women and girls to break the cycle of ignorance, poverty, and disease.
