April 27 2008, 2 p.m. All AAUW-IA members are invited to attend the next planning committee meeting for the October 25, 2008 reenactment of the Boone Suffrage Parade. Meet at the Boone County Historical Center, 602 Story Street. For more information about the reenactment, go to www.celebratesuffrage2008.org  Also see "Take your places, Ladies!" below, for a play to be presented in the afternoon.

All AAUW - IA members are invited to take part in planning the event and parading with other women's groups in the fall. For those who live too far to travel to Boone you may send for the minutes of the past two meetings and the agenda for the April 27 meeting. Contact bchscaswell@opencominc.com.

Directions for the April 27 meeting:  Coming in from either east or west on Highway 30 turn into Boone at the junction of Highway 30 and Story Street.  This is the main turn for Boone. There is a WALMART on the west side of Story Street at the turn.  Go straight north on Story for about a mile and one half, through a residential area to the downtown.  The Historical Society is housed in a large turn of the 19th/20th century building located on the east side of story at the beginning of the downtown area.  There is a large sign outside.  The police department is diagonally across the street

A very special musical program is planned for May 10th at the Unity Center, 3791 Blairs Ferry Road NE in Cedar Rapids.  It will begin for AAUW members at 9:00 a.m. with a catered breakfast, followed by a general meeting and installation of new officers. AAUW Iowa branches are invited to attend. There will be a short break before an 11:00 musical program which is open to the public. The musical program is a delightful story about an intriguing piece of Iowa history.  Be prepared for a lovely blend of lively, original music composed by Merrill Sparks, a native Iowan now a resident of Iowa City.  Sue Jorgensen is the production manager and Trudy Sundermann is the director for this venture created especially for AAUW.  Bring your friends and family!  The performance is free and open to the public.  Donations accepted.  For more information contact Sue Jorgensen.

Take Your Places, Ladies!
October 25, 2008 at 2:30 pm in Boone, Iowa

A play about the woman’s suffrage efforts in Iowa prior to the ratification of the 19th Amendment will be presented on the same day as the reenactment parade. Many people, women in particular, will be wearing 1908 period clothing for the parade. The play takes place in 1954…so that would be another potential marker for clothing. Bring your daughters, sons, grandchildren, and husbands.  They will have fun learning about their places, too.
